HUBERMAN LAB: Using Red Light to Improve Metabolism & the Harmful Effects of LED
“This is an issue on the same level as asbestos. This is a public health issue, and it’s big.” - Dr. Glen Jeffery, discussing LED lights
An impactful episode that clearly explains the light spectrum, ranging from short wavelengths to long wavelengths, and the especially healing effects of longer wavelengths.
Long-wavelength light (i.e. red and near-infrared light) is discussed in relation to improvements in mitochondrial function, eye health, and brain health (with longer wavelengths able to penetrate more deeply, even into the skull), as well as neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s disease and dementia.
The importance of sunlight for natural, broad-spectrum light.
Health concerns around LED lighting (short wavelengths). While energy-efficient, most LED bulbs are not broad-spectrum and instead emit a pronounced blue-light spike without the balancing presence of red wavelengths. The episode discusses research on the effects of LED on mitochondrial function, sperm morphology, weight gain, lifespan, and more.
Practical tips for implementing healthier lighting at work and home, including using incandescent and halogen bulbs (which are broad-spectrum), prioritizing natural light through untinted windows, and incorporating plants indoors.

Beeswax Candles
Speaking of healing light, I’ve been using beeswax candles around my place. It’s a nice nighttime transition, eliminating the need to always flip on lights as you go from space to space.
BEESWAX BENEFITS
Cleaner Air: Beeswax candles release negative ions when burned that bond with positively charged particles—such as dust, pollen, and mold—causing them to become heavier and fall out of the air or be drawn back into the candle.
Slow Burning: A higher melting point than soy or paraffin means beeswax candles are long-burning and naturally dripless (mostly).
Warm Golden Light: A higher melting point produces a flame around 1800K+, often described as the closest to natural sunlight.
Non-toxic: No petrochemicals (virtually no soot), synthetics, or fragrances.
Be sure to confirm candles are 100% beeswax, such as those from Colorado-based company, Bluecorn.
Stainless Steel Kettle
This stainless steel electric kettle by BODUM has proven to be both useful and pretty on my countertop. Since I already use filtered water, I removed the limescale filter and its plastic parts. Currently on sale.
