I remember my very first magazine, an August 1994 edition of Seventeen, purchased in a Montana grocery store by my obliging grandma. In retrospect, the glossy magazine pages contrasted sharply with that small farm town, but I loved both — experiencing one humble world while being transported to another. In middle school, I created mock magazines for fun. Yep. Later, I pursued a journalism degree in undergrad and eventually worked as a publisher for a Texas lifestyle magazine. I appreciate great content accompanied by beautiful visuals — which, of course, is subjective, with my parameters clearly shifting over the years.
All this to say, browsing Substack newsletters is my modern version of flipping through magazine pages. I subscribe to (too) many — which I browse with varying levels of interest — but I thought it’d be nice to continue to share the ones I’m really enjoying.
